The Globeville, Elyira, and Swansea (GES) Community Health Study is a comprehensive study assessing the impact of the environment on the health and wellbeing of GES residents. GES are neighborhoods in North Denver near the intersection of I-25 and I-70 and experience many sources of chemical and non-chemical exposures.
This study was created as a result of the Sierra Club et al. v. Chao et al. settlement agreement concerning the Central I-70 project through the GES community.
This study aims to create products that are meaningful, relevant, address community needs, and create a complete story of environmental exposures, health outcomes, and lived experience of GES residents. To accomplish this, community input is included in planning study outcomes and in creating study products. Planned activities include:
Mapping of environmental exposures and health outcomes
Analysis of the health risks from the environmental exposures in GES listed above
Educational materials for the community to use
In this study, we are including secondary data describing environmental quality and health outcomes in GES.
For environmental quality we are including air, water, soil (including Superfund sites), odors, noise, access to goods and services, green space, and connectivity and mobility.
For health outcomes, we are including many diseases that are of interest to the community and have been linked to environmental exposures, including lead poisoning, asthma and respiratory diseases, heart disease, cancer, birth outcomes, causes of mortality, and mental health.
While not our primary focus, we are also including a discussion of the social determinants of health.
